Foreshortening is an art term where an object becomes larger the closer it is to the viewer and smaller when further away. The students traced their hands or feet and tried to create the optical illusion that their bodies were much smaller because it is farther away.

Creating robots from recycled materials has been fun and challenging. There was a lot of problem solving as the students figured out how to make the robot stand. (Lessons learned: make sure the legs are even length and sturdy enough to hold the top part of the robot!)

The only handicap in life is a bad attitude! I often hear, "This is hard...or I can't draw!" The students learned about a man who was born without arms and legs and yet has accomplished all his goals by working hard and not giving up. They got an opportunity to create a prosthetic for someone without hands or arms and then had to try out their invention. It was very eye opening for most of them to realize how hard it is to draw without arms! Please take some time to watch this inspirational video about Brett Eastburn! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjUlC-DQGXk |

Busy month! First the students created Icon art of Mary and baby Jesus and leaned about the process of how the artisans would breathe on the surface to create moisture so the gold leaf would adhere to the surface. This symbolized the breath of heaven. Later in the month the students created glass Christmas ornaments to take home and put on their tree and then decorated gift bags to take home. The evergreen Christmas tree is a reminder of the everlasting life we have to look forward to!

Giuseppe Arcimboldo (also spelled Arcimboldi; 1527 - July 11, 1593) was an Italian painter best known for creating imaginative portrait heads made entirely of such objects as fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, and books - that is, he painted representations of these objects on the canvas arranged in such a way that the whole collection of objects formed a recognizable likeness of the portrait subject.

Here are some of the student interpretations of Arcimboldo's portraits.

This assignment was done in several steps. First the students did a careful observational drawing then traced it onto an separate piece of paper and cut it out. The background was done with stencils and in rollers. Then using the knowledge about composition, the students placed their drawings into their backgrounds. They all had success as you can see by the drawings below!

We have been learning about composition or how to arrange things in a picture so they are balanced and are pleasing to the eye. The exercise below was to create a simple picture using shapes to tell a scary story. I introduced the rule of thirds where placing horizon lines or objects on where the picture is divided into thirds is more interesting than placing in the center of the page.

We are all super heroes! Everyone is gifted in different ways and the students each shared what their strength (or super power) is. They then created super hero headbands and I took their photos. The next step was to draw an explosion with their name comic book style. Inspiration was taken from Roy Lichtenstein, a pop artist who specialized in comic illustration and paintings. To learn more about him and see his paintings check out this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Lichtenstein

We started out painting papers and cut them into heart shapes. (for Valentine's Day!) The assignment was to create a radial symmetry design.
